Does NATURinFORM produce ecologically responsibly?

Sustainable and environmentally friendly production is our highest priority. NATURinFORM uses only wooden fibres – so-called biocomposites- that are a byproduct in the wood-processing industry and thereby protects resources during production. Additionally, we only use wooden fibres from suppliers that have been awarded the PEFC hallmark (www.pefc.de). Because it is permanently striving for highest quality, NATURinFORM was awarded the hallmark of excellence from the Qualitätsgemeinschaft Holzwerkstoffe e.V. and with its voluntary return policy and guarantee to recycle its own WPC products, NATURinFORM is actively encouraging sustainable and ecological production.

WPC: Wood Polymer Composite

What exactly is WPC, where does it come from, and what material is it made up of?

WPC stands for Wood Polymer Composite and is a combination of materials that has been produced and used in North America for more than 20 years – especially in outdoor areas. It consists of a combination of wooden fibres with an environmentally friendly, thermoplastic binding agent.

How is a WPC product manufactured?

WPC products are extruded, i.e. both components are melted together (wooden fibres and thermoplastic binding agent) and drawn into an infinite strand using pressure and temperature.

What are the most important advantages in comparison to traditional wood?

With its many positive features, WPC will enhance your patio or walking area permanently. An even, beautiful, wooden look that is very low on maintenance is what makes it special. You don’t even have to paint or varnish it. Of course, we produce all our profiles and accessories with wood fibres from sustainable forestry (certified wood suppliers according to pefc – www.pefc.de)

Feel comfortable with our WPC:

  • barefoot friendly and splinter-free
  • permanently beautiful with an elegant wooden look
  • non-slippery, even when wet
  • easy to lay and look after (no painting or oiling), saving you time and money
  • wood from sustainable forestry
  • no tropical woods (certified wood suppliers according to pefc)
What roles do the factors wooden look and feel play as a selling element?

WPC is the modern advancement of wood as a natural building element. Because it is industrially produced, it has an elegant profile, and its surface is slip-resistant, meaning that the natural characteristics could be improved and now have essential further advantages. Our WPC patio decks are special, as they have a high percentage of wood (ca. 70%.) Furthermore, thanks to their high quality, they will always give you the feeling of walking on a wooden deck.

What are wood pockets and how do they occur?

NATURinFORM decks consist of approx. 70% wood fiber. The special feature of our products made in Germany is the combination of native, PEFC-certified wood with an environmentally friendly polymer. During the manufacturing process, so-called wood pockets, small inclusions of bast (the transition layer from bark to wood), for example, can occur due to the nature of the raw material. These particles can break through the surface as a result of weathering. Most of them disappear by themselves due to abrasion from use. Otherwise, they can be removed mechanically, which does not damage the product. Following the guidelines of EPLF (European Producers of Laminate Flooring), the particles that are visible at standing eye level with normal light incidence are used for evaluation.

Can WPC products still be described as natural, environmentally friendly products, despite their portion of polymer?

"Natural and environmentally friendly“ have a new meaning with WPC, as WPC consists of natural materials that are melted together, yet retain their natural characteristics. As the wooden fibres are a by-product in the wood-processing industry, it is protecting resources to use them in a natural building material. And the use of WPC helps prevent cutting down rain and tropical forest, additionally saving on the delivery distance. Because NATURinFORM’s WPC is only produced in Upper Franconian Redwitz an der Rodach. “Made in Germany” stands for certified quality, the use of raw materials of premium quality, and the site.

Can WPC be easily disposed of?

It is recommended to dispose of WPC-leftovers in bulk rubbish collectors or waste facilities. Alternatively, NATURinFORM’s customers can return their products (sustainable return policy.)

Waste code:
170201

Classification and normal case:
Depending on the polymer used, a classification in the waste wood categories A II or A III is possible. The wood content should be over 50%, which is ensured with all German manufacturers.
Waste wood category A II when the polymer consists of polyethylene (PE) or polypropylene (PP).
Waste wood category A III* when the polymer consists of PVC.

Comments:
Frequent impurities: nails, screws, mineral materials and other structural parts
Test for contaminants: visual

*The use of PVC as a binding agent is not clarified in the German Waste Wood Ordinance, since it is assumed that this material is only used for coatings. Following the existing regulation, it is our opinion that PVC-bonded WPC can be classified in the category A III. This must still be clarified with the regulators, however.

Is any waste created during production?

Any waste resulting during production is ground, prepared, and put back into the production process, used, for example, to make a new deck or underlying construction. Additionally, NATURinFORM offers its customers a return policy which is voluntary and remains subject to change, for used NATURinFORM WPC products, to re-use these, sustainably recycling them in an environmentally friendly production cycle.

Products, laying

How does the colour change?

In order to make the wood fiber visible the surfaces of NATURinFORM productions are consciously roughened for certain products. The surfaces of the terrace boards that may be used on both sides have anti-skid fluting. The boards are designed either as cubicle boards or as solid boards.

Like a good wine our products also require time to mature in order to achieve the highest quality.

In general all of our products go through a maturation process that is induced by light, air, sun and humidity. As a result of the different weather conditions in the respective settings the nature of the wood fibers is then transformed through patination from the original fresh color to the matured board. This change in color continues depending on weather conditions and the place of assembly. Due to the high wood content the product behaves similarly to the natural product when it comes to a change in color. Different weathering, e.g. through partial roofing of the surface, may result in a different color development.
Please note that the shades of our ColourEdition decks can change slightly due to weathering and natural maturing processes. This is because of the high percentage of wood, which, as a natural product, can change its colouring.

NATURinFORM products are natural, weatherproof and stable in form – without oiling, coating or polishing. NATURinFORM WPC is a nature building material and is remarkable for its high wood fiber content. In production this means that we process a quality that is as even as possible. However, fluctuations in the high-quality raw material may nevertheless result in differences in color when different batches are installed. This does not affect the durability and is therefore not a reason for complaint.

EXAMPLE: Patina formation on brushed and fully weathered boards.

How is the high weatherproof durability of the decks achieved? Can water seep into the decks and damage them?

Because we have very precise material requirements for the wood shavings and the thermoplastic binding agent, we can ensure the material’s high stability against weathering. Water can (if the decks are laid according to our guidelines) seep into the decks and is dried out of the decks in dry periods. This does not damage the decks at all. To ensure the patio remains durable, you need to keep to the laying manual for the decks, or the privacy shield respectively. Please download the manual here.

Do you use fungicides in or on your WPC decks?

No, on principle we do not use pesticides or fungicides. The natural characteristics of wood are so much improved by using the mixture with freshly produced, single-variety plastic (PE), so that moss or green growth cannot find a base to grow on. This is what makes the decks so low on maintenance. PE is a plastic material that is often used in food packaging. (Durabilty class 1, very durable, 2/2012, evaluation according to DIN CEN/TS 15083-1, Fraunhofer Institut for wood research WKI)

How do you achieve the different colours of decks?

The different colours are created by adding environmentally friendly colour pigments to the mixture. This leads to a durable and even colour. Colour changes and shades are deliberate, and emphasise the natural wooden look. The surfaces change through weathering influences, such as the sun and rain.

Do WPC decks need to be painted and / or oiled?

WPC decks on principle need not be painted or oiled. If this should nevertheless be desired, please make sure the deck has weathered completely (ca. 15 weeks after being laid.)

How are such surfaces cleaned?

NATURinFORM products can be cleaned easily using water. If there is severe soiling, it is possible to use a high-pressure cleaner (not a steam cleaner) with a maximum of 80 bar, from a distance of at least 20 cm to the deck. Please do not use cleaning agents containing solvents. Additionally, NATURinFORM has a WPC special cleaning agent on offer to clean persistent stains.

It is highly necessary to keep to the laying manual when laying the decks or assembling the privacy shield to ensure the patio remains durable. You can download the manual at www.naturinform,com. The decks should be cleaned at least once a year - if they are in the shade or underneath trees, more often. You can clean NATURinFORM’s products easily just by using water.

Traces of being used or weathering can simply be brushed off with a hose and broom or mop. If there is more persistent soiling you can use a high-pressure cleaner (not a steam cleaner) with a maximum of 80 bar, from a distance of at least 20 cm to the deck. Thanks to the polymer percentage, our WPC products are low on maintenance.

Painting or oiling to support durability is not necessary. If there are persistent stains, such as fat or soot, please use our special WPC cleaning agent that was developed for us and is biodegradable.

How are the individual decks attached to each other to create a patio surface?

The individual decks are laid and connected using specially created and adapted mounting brackets made of stainless steel; in wet and salty areas made of stainless steel V4A; and are practically invisible. These mounting brackets additionally give the patio deck the flexibility that they can expand and shrink depending on the weather, without putting a further strain on the connections.

How are the patio decks assembled? What does the underlying surface have to be like?

You can find all the information you need on our internet page at "Service“ "Laying videos.“ Alternatively, there is a PDF document with extensive information which you can download here: WPC patio decks laying manual.

Who can lay WPC decks expertly, what kind of tools do they need?

WPC decks need to be expertly laid according to our given guidelines. Our WPC can be processed using all standard wood-processing tools. (Saws, mills, drills.)

Can individual decks be exchanged from a patio surface if necessary?

Individual decks can be exchanged thanks to the innovative connection system. Download tip laying direction: more…

What results do the decks have in slip-resistance tests?

Slip-resistance test – DIN 51130 and DIN 51097

Our brushed deck surfaces are especially slip-resistant – even when wet – and therefore ideal for public areas (swimming pools, kindergardens, hotel patios, etc.) The following test results were achieved at the TÜV Rheinland / LGA:

- COMPACT according to DIN 51130 both sides R 12
- POPULAR according to DIN 51130 finely striated R 12 / widely striated R 13 (highest level) according to DIN 51097 Class C (highest level)
- RATIONAL according to DIN 51130 both sides R 13 (highest level)

Can the NATURinFORM patio deck be used as a supporting beam or load-bearing construction?

If the deck is to be mounted in an area where building inspectorate approval is required, then it is necessary to have a statically sufficiently calculated load-bearing underlying construction as a surface for the decks. NATURinFORM decks may not be used as a load-bearing constructional element, or as a balcony surface without an underlying construction. The material has not been approved for this application. It is necessary to have a statically calculated, closed and load-bearing underlying construction. (Except our model POPULAR massive with general building inspectorate approval).

Where can I find a laying manual?

You can find them at www.naturinform.com at Downloads. Please note the advice in the laying manual must be adhered to. More…

What impact does chlorine or salt water have on NATURinFORM products?

Chlorine and salt water have no negative effect on the characteristics of NATURinFORM’s patio decks, facades, and privacy shields. When laying a patio, stainless steel V4A mounting brackets must be used, instead of standard stainless steel brackets.

What impact do substances containing iron have on NATURinFORM products?

Watersolvent tanning agents can be in our raw material wood, which can react to minimum amounts of iron and lead to a grey-blue-black colouring. This can happen if plant or lawn fertilizers containing iron are used or if products containing iron weather on the decks’ surface.

Can water stains develop?

If patios are only partly covered then it is possible that water stains will develop in the transition area between the covered and the open area. Rain water is washed over the surface up to the covered part and dries there. Dust particles are thereby dampened and then dry out, remaining on the surface. On the open area, which is constantly exposed to sun and rain, this effect is not very strong and is due to the manner of construction. There is no impact on the quality and it is therefore not a reason for complaint. The water stains can usually be removed using clear water and standard cleaning tools. This effect will decrease as time goes by, but cannot be completely avoided.

Can an electrostatic charge occur?

An electrostatic charge can occur when relative humidity is low and there has been a longer period of aridity. By using a ground cable between the surface and a balustrade, wall, or anything equivalent, it is possible to avoid electrostatic charges.

Which impact has the insolation on the heat production of WPC?

On hot days, and in areas sheltered from wind, it may not be possible to use with direct skin contact, due to high surface temperatures.

What will change as a result of the new German Packaging Act?
